Banned\/Illegal as of February 24, 2026 <\/mark><\/strong>

Connecticut banned kratom by passing Public Act 25-101<\/a><\/strong> (originally HB 6855<\/a><\/strong>) in June 2025. This law did not immediately ban the substance but instead gave the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP)<\/strong> the specific authority to classify it as a controlled substance. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final step of the ban was completed, February 24, 2026<\/strong>, making Connecticut the seventh state to implement a statewide ban.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Ban Was Implemented<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process moved through three distinct phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Legislative Authority (June 2025):<\/strong> Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act 25-101<\/a>, a broad drug control bill. It included a provision allowing the DCP to designate Mitragyna speciosa (kratom)<\/a>, including its leaves and extracts, as a controlled substance.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Agency Rulemaking (October 2025):<\/strong> The DCP issued proposed regulations<\/a> to place kratom into Schedule I<\/strong>, citing public health risks and a lack of approved medical use. They held a public hearing on October 15, 2025, to gather testimony from advocates and health officials.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Final Approval (February 24, 2026):<\/strong> The bipartisan Legislative Regulation Review Committee (LRRC)<\/a> officially voted to approve the scheduling. This action criminalizes the sale, distribution, and possession of kratom and its derivatives, such as 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)<\/strong>, throughout the state.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
