Per Lora Romey, President of the IPHA (International Plant & Herbal Alliance):

Utah Advocates (and other Utah Supporters) –

McKell’s ban bill will be presented in committee on Monday at 2:00 pm.  I am attaching the agenda for your reference.  It is CRITICAL that we get bodies there.  If we have a large number of speakers it will send a message.  McKell will have his troops there and I do know that the Kratom Danger Awareness group is planning to speak virtually.   There will be lots of sob stories with emotion.  You need to bring the emotion and real stories to offset the negativity.

Instructions on virtual participation will be live on the morning of the hearing.  Here is a link to the calendar.  The instructions for the Zoom should be listed sometime in the morning.  There could also be a sign-up to testify, so each of you need to get on this link on Monday.  https://le.utah.gov/asp/interim/Cal.asp?year=2026&month=1&comit=SSTBUS

I spoke with someone who was at a committee hearing today and they gave speakers 2 minutes.  I suggest you prepare a 2 minute and 3 minute testimony.  Use ChatGPT to help you fit it into the right amount of time.  When you arrive, please be there by 1:30 pm at minimum to get a seat.  The seats will fill up quickly and when they do, they are gone and you cannot participate.  Please wear very conservative clothing and hairstyles.

Please note that Senator Vickers is the chair.  He is sponsoring a 7-OH schedule one bill.  I have been told that he is wavering and still trying to decide if he wants to support a full ban or not.  This is why your voice is critical!

When you testify, please tell your story.  Tell them the repercussions of a ban in your life.  They need to know that a real person is behind this ban.  McKell will have his troops there too so we must show up!!  It would be good to tell the committee members that you support a 7-OH scheduling, but that they need to preserve natural plant kratom for people like you who truly need it.  We need to plant a BIG seed on Monday.  These lawmakers need to walk away from the committee hearing really questioning this issue.  The opposition will be strong.  We must be stronger!  In speaking with the lobbyist, he did say that in all likelihood this will pass out of committee on Monday, so to not be alarmed if it does.  He said that senators hate to kill a bill in committee.  They may all vote to pass it out of committee, but that does not mean they will vote for the ban on the floor.  Monday is to help them make up their minds so that when it hits the floor, they are ready to vote our way.

When this leaves committee, it will be heard in the senate.  Maybe even as early as the next day!  We must be ready for the next hearing too.  This will be the second reading.  Then it moves to a third reading and

PLEASE click on the links below.  Submit your written testimony to each member of the committee.  Please do this by Sunday since the hearing is Monday at 2:00 pm.  If you are not in Utah, it would still be helpful for you to submit testimony.  This link will show you the committee members.  Please put in the subject line – OPPOSE SB0045.  It would even be helpful for family members to send emails.  The more the better.
